Repair when practical. Replace when sensible.

A clear reason for every recommendation.

John Calhoun Electric & HVAC provides AC installation and replacement for homeowners throughout Roanoke, VA and nearby communities. We install new systems, pull out worn-out ones, and tell you honestly which one you need.

Our team sees failed compressors, leaking coils, worn motors, refrigerant problems, outdated equipment, and systems that need repeated repairs just to keep running.

The goal is not to replace equipment just because something went wrong. We first look at the condition of the system and the repair that would be needed. If replacement makes more sense, we help you choose the right next step.

Repair or replacement?

When does an AC system need to be replaced?

Not every broken air conditioner needs replacing. Plenty of calls end with a new capacitor, a motor, or a drain repair, and a straight AC repair is the cheaper answer. Replacement makes sense when the compressor is gone, the coil leaks, or the unit still runs on R-22. At that point you are putting good money into old equipment.

We have also seen repairs priced so close to a new system that replacing it was the better deal. We look at the whole system before we tell you that. Businesses and property managers can also see our commercial HVAC services.

What to expect

Our AC replacement process.

01

Check the Existing System

We inspect the equipment and identify the problem. That means refrigerant pressures, electrical, motors, coils, airflow, and the compressor.

02

Talk Through Repair and Replacement Options

When possible, we explain the repair option first. The right answer depends on the system, its condition, and the cost of keeping it running.

03

Select the Right Equipment

We look at your current equipment, your home, and how the old system was installed. For rooms and additions where new ductwork does not make sense, we also install ductless mini splits. You should not pay for more system than your house needs.

04

Remove and Replace the Equipment

Our work includes complete AC and heat pump change-outs, compressor and evaporator coil replacements, mini-split replacements, and new indoor and outdoor equipment installations.

05

Test the System Before We Leave

We verify refrigerant operation, temperature readings, electrical components, drainage, airflow, and overall cooling performance before the job is complete.

Helpful answers

AC installation and replacement FAQs.

How do I know if I should repair or replace my AC?

It depends on what failed, the age and condition of the equipment, and repair cost. A small electrical failure is a repair. A dead compressor, a leaking coil, or repeat refrigerant loss is where replacement wins.

Can you replace both indoor and outdoor equipment?

Yes. Some replacements involve both portions of the system. We determine what needs replacement based on the condition and design of the existing equipment.

What if my AC still works but does not cool well?

Poor cooling does not automatically mean replacement. Dirty coils, clogged filters, low refrigerant, and bad capacitors are all repairs. Diagnosis should come first.

Should I replace an older R-22 air conditioner?

Old R-22 equipment still runs. It just gets harder to justify putting money into. We inspect the equipment and explain the practical options.

What happens if my compressor fails?

Sometimes compressor replacement makes sense. In other cases, equipment condition or repair cost makes full replacement the better choice. We assess the complete system.

Can you replace a leaking evaporator coil?

Yes. Whether replacing the coil or the entire system makes more sense depends on the condition of the remaining equipment.

Do you install heat pumps too?

Yes. We install and replace heat pump systems for Roanoke homes. Visit our Heat Pump Services page for more information.

How long should I wait if my AC is starting to fail?

If it needs frequent service, discuss replacement before it stops completely. That gives you time to understand your options instead of making a rushed summer decision.
